Boarding
At Sunrise Meadows our priority is the care of the horses. Each horse is treated as an individual and fed accordingly. Their condition is assessed upon arrival and monitored thereafter. Changes or problems are noted and addressed. This could be as simple as changing paddock mates or changes stalls or it could be an underlying health problem. Owners are kept updated at all times as to the welfare of their horses. Sunrise has an excellent source of professionals to help care for your horse. The Okotoks vet clinic is only 15 minutes away and provide an excellent service. Our farrier ensures that all horses under his care on kept on a regular schedule. We offer scheduling and handling for Vet and Farrier visits when you are on our program.
Feeding
Hay
We feed hay 4 times a day. Our hay source is secured year round and is delivered on a weekly basis. The quality is guarunteed. The amount of hay fed is based on 1/2 a bale of hay per day per horse but is adjusted according to the horse's needs.
Grain
Due to the variety of horse nutritional needs we offer a variety of "grain supplements" including :
- 12% Complete feed pellets from Masterfeed for the average horse,
- Step 6 for senior and hard keepers with 14% protein, milk and oil pellets.
- Our own mix Sweet Feed: 60% rolled barley, 20% rolled oats, 20% corn . We mainly use for the outside horses during the cold months to help them regulate their heat and give them the added boost they need in the winter in order to live outside 24/7. During the warm months the outside horses get 12% pellets. Due to the high nutrient content of the barley and the low sugar content of the feed the horse get the required nutrients without making them hot. Note that we feed the pasture and the non grain paddock horses sweet feed during -20 winter weather to ensure that they have adequate heat from their feed to stay warm during severe weather. This is a free service that we include for the benefit of the horse.
Supplements
Most horses require dietary supplementation of some kind. We offer a wide variety to meet all our equine needs. Those supplement that benefit the general daily health of the horse is included in the Board. We buy additional supplements such as joint care in bulk and pass the savings onto our boarders who pay for it at our cost price. Sadie has an extensive background in equine nutrition and will be happy to advise you as to your horse's needs. She also monitors all the horse's condition and will discuss their personal needs with you.
Included in your board price is the following:
- 1 cup of Bran is fed on a daily basis to all grain fed horses. Bran ensures a healthy and efficient digestive system in your horse and reduces the risk of colic. This is fed moistened in the night grain.
- 2 oz of Barrier is fed with the bran from April through to September. This is composed of Diantomaeous Earth, garlic and vitamins. Its main function is in fly control. The diantenarous earth kills the fly larvae in the horse's digestive system and thus reduces their worm load and eliminates flies in barn. The garlic makes the horses unappealing to the flies and thus they are bothered less outside.
- 3 De-wormings per year. In this way we ensure that all the horses on the property have been dewormed. Owners are welcome to deworm more frequently if they so desire.

Lessons
Whether you are a beginner, a novice or a horse owner and rider of any level our goal is to personalize your teaching program to meet you and your horse's needs. We can take you all the way from the correct uses of brushes to the show ring.
Riding is more than a sport. It is a communication and partnering with another being who speaks and understands a whole difference language. If you are just learning to ride, it is not enough just to stay on which is the 1st step. You need to learn about the horse, how he sees, thinks and functions. You need to learn how to move and direct him both from the ground and from his back. You need to know how to move safely around him and how to command his respect. Then and only then can you become partners that can last a life time in a dance you'll love.
If you are a horse owner, we can help your partnership become more clear. We can teach you about his needs both physically and mentally. We can help you keep him sound and healthy. We can enhance both you and him as an athlete or make your time together more better for both of your whether you are just spending time together on the trail or in the ring. As an owner you should know about nutrition, first aid, behaviour, equipment and stable management. We will help you gain all of this information not only during lessons but anytime a teaching situation arises. Our goal is for you to be able to make knowledgeable decisions for you and your horse.
Private Lessons: Cost $35.00 per person up to 45 minutes private or 1 hour semi private with 2 people. $15.00 school horse use extra.
Group Jumping Lessons: Cost $25.00 per person. These are special sessions usually put together on saturday's during the winter as mini clinics. Several groups come together for a shared learning experience where they can have hands on learning while they not only ride in their appropriate groups but take part in the other group lessons.
Classroom Theory: Cost $6.00 per 1/2 hour session. This is where we learn either in a class type setting or through hands on the technical knowledge about the horse.
Training
We believe in helping you train your own horse. We only ride, lunge or work your horse if you do not yet have the skills or the time necessary to make it work. We teach you the techniques along with your horse.
Lunging: is an excellent method of communication with your horse and is great way to build balance, rhythm, coordinatioin, and muscle. There are many techniques and skills to be incorporated. Cost: $20.00 / session.
Hacking: is used by the owner when they do not have the time to ride their horse and we have one of our trainers rides it for exercise. No new training takes place. Cost: $25.00
Dressage /Flat Training: This is a training ride where the horse is being schooled through movements that it is ready for in its stage of developement. Cost: $30.00
Jumping: Horses need to learn how to jump in high stages. Each new hieght of courses that the horse is asked to advanced to requires a new set of skills. These skills need to be taught to a horse by a seasoned trainer before its amature owner attempts the new height if the horse is not expereinence in that height. Jumping training requires 2 people during the schooling. A knowledgeable person needs to be on the ground. Cost $35.00
